Concur with reports of Chimer & Exile. One drop in concentration for the goal and lack of penetration in final third limited us to the two chances mentioned. Was hoping JB would have given their defence summat different to cope with half way thru second half but then again I only made my school's under 16s so what do I know ! Impressed with Nicky Hunt tonight in particular.

Agree with most of the last 3 posts,but am surprised nothing has been said about the ref....... A total chicken bellied slime ball, I need to see it again but in normal time it looked like a horror tackle on Peter Murphy absolutely no attempt to play the ball and appeared like a deliberate attempt to cripple him.....nothing but a red card and an extended ban.....it wouldn't surprise me to hear there were a few afters in the tunnel...The ref took an age to make the decision then bottled it and produced a yellow...and he was that quick I never even saw him pocket the big brown envelope.....RESPECT to Peter Marsden who footed the bill at half time for all the away fans at the snack bar.Not many other results went our way but things aren't desperate as yet....roll on Saturday and the company of our recent birthday boy ......

Seems like JB's reluctance to change the dynamic sufficiently early after we go behind is possibly becoming a problem. He constantly tells us how much faith he has in the squad but doesn't act on it.

The generosity of Portsmouth fans knows no bounds....over 13000 the 50/50 half time draw...£5k....£3k....£1k.... No a laughable £134 and a fiver of that was mine....

Now hang on a sec, Chubbyman. It's no good blaming the ref. Based on our second half performance, we would have struggled to beat 8 men, never mind 10. Portsmouth were quicker than us and they won virtually all the second balls. It seemed like Pompey were playing with 12 anyway so one fewer would have made no difference.
The failure to make earlier substitutions is one of two tactical weaknesses. The other is to bring all 11 players back to defend corners and other set pieces. I cannot understand why we don't leave at least one player (Piero) upfield. There are two immediate advantages. The first is that he would occupy two opposing defenders. And following that, it would make our penalty area less crowded. A third major advantage, though, is that it would make some kind of target for our default hoofball clearance. With all 11 back, it is inevitable that the ball will come back at us immediately - and that is exactly how Portsmouth scored. But what do I know?:rolleyes: |

Agree, Chubster, about Mingoia and Liddle, although the former was a bit slow to make the telling through ball / cross on a few occasions. I also wish he (and others) would play much wider when not on the ball. Whenever Stanley have the ball in the left or right corner in their half, our 'wide men' (sic) always look like they've been told to mark the opposing full backs in the middle of the pitch, instead of getting as far away from the defender as possible, into space, on the 'wing'. Having a wide receiver often means the long forward pass needn't be 100% accurate or it pulls their defensive back line across the pitch, opening up gaps.
I thought Liddle did well and was surprised he was taken off and even more surprised Molyneux went to left back to replace him, although he had been marked out much of the game up to that point and was getting increasingly frustrated at not being able to get a shot in. One thing we must disagree on was the ref. He was no better/worse than most league 2 officials, but he didn't lose the match for Stanley. The foul on Murphy looked bad (as did Wilson's) but, from where I saw it, I don't think there was any malicious intent. The ball was in the air and it was a clumsy attempt that caught Murphy square on the shin, which is why shinpads continue to be worn. Stanley remain the third worst for shots on target and the second worst for shots off target in League 2 (see link below). The Football League | Stats | Club Shooting In the Premeir League players may only need one chance to turn a game but, in League 2, I suspect on average it requires a lot more opportunities for one of them to be turned into a goal. Playing for a one-nil win is OK but even that will need the team to generate more efforts on goal than last night. The fight goes on... |
