Re: Hatter's Match Thread

First half the hatters won it through a combination of out competing us and referree giving them every 50/50 decision. To be honest mainly the first reason. We improved second half without looking like getting back in game. First half we tactically played into there hands with everything aimed at Billy on his own against two big defenders. Luton pressed us into it but we needed to get the ball down on floor in midfield and further forward. Never mind big week of prep for Coventry test.

No complaints about the ref. Our ill discipline was to blame in the first half. Hughes pretended to have been head butted. Kee stupidly got involved with argu bargy for the rest of the match. The Don made a rash challenge for the penalty.

Second half and McLeod dived for a penalty.

The fans stupidly goaded their players, a fan chucked a pie crust at the ref.

Ludicrous.

Can someone explain WHY we have played 11 League games with 2 strikers, scored in every game, then started today with only 1, Its rank poor judgement in my book. Luton are the best side ive seen this season yet we do this!! Brown i thought was poor very poor today yet Sean Mac and Clarkie were taken off when both were doing reasonable, and Brown remained on,we looked more dangerous when Mcleod came on but too little to late.:(

Couldn't agree more, and whilst others will no doubt be providing us with an in-depth analysis, my only thoughts as I left the ground were " this is not a promotion chasing team "
which really saddened me.

( Mind you, sitting next to a smug Luton Director didn't really help matters one little bit ! ).

On Stanley !.... on to greater things !.

Re: Hatter's Match Thread

We were a poor second all over the match. We hardly won a second ball. some of our players should practice their diving skills as they were so obvious it was embarrassing. The officials were not the best but that is no excuse for today's performance. Cashy asked the question many times. Why when we are at home do we play with one striker up front? Billy is a good goal poacher but he can not plough a lone furrow on his own against teams like Luton. In fairness to Luton they battled for every ball where we didn't. Player for player they were not better than us but they did their homework like other teams have and we became easy to frustrate and beat. Our passing is still woeful at times. Our distribution from the goal keeper is too slow. We had the wrong team out there today. We did not seem to have a decent game plan. Despite the changes which did help it was too little too late. Wilks never got a look in. we were well contained, I think we had two shots on target. Our corners were telegraphed so they offered little or no threat. There is a big job to do in turning this team into a promotion team. We play too much hit and hope balls along with a large dose of desperation at times. We are not clinical enough in front of goal consistently enough. Tactics and team selection has to looked at as we are looking poor at the moment. We have the players but we nedd to get the mixture right.

We had to change from plan A due to fitness issues with Jackson. Playing 1 up front worked well last week so was worth a go.

Coley changed it with plenty of time today. Just needed a break. Team played well second half.

Luton man for man superior to our XI and best team I've seen this season.

Cant agree, we got Edwards, Wilkes, plus Brown was way off the mark today, shoulda removed him at half time imho Going 4-3-3 last week did the trick. what was up with Sean Mac @ crooksie? neither were playing poorly, yet they were taken off with Brown still on.

It was worth a shot swapping McConville for mcCleod. Thought the little fella looked a threat for a while.
Not sure about Wilks. Maybe Cashy's assessment of him from a couple of weeks ago is correct.

I thought we were more dangerous when Mcleod came on, but thought S.M.had put a few decent balls in, may have been worth trying Mcleod through the middle? But weres Edwards? seems a big lad, hard to knock off the ball?

Thornily, Hughes, Rawson, Donacien.
-----Conneely, Brown, Nolan.
Clark-------------------------- McConville.
-----------------Kee.
our front line were never going to win the high ball against this Luton side, our passing when keeping the ball on the ground was seldom accurate or quick enough to cause them problems, Luton were much the better team on the day and deserved their win

Coley's post match interviews are usuallly excellent but I think he's got it wrong today. Complaining about decisions and the like.

We were beat by a better side today at times it looked like men against boys they were better second ball and midfield all game 1 upfront not for me but good luck Luton you deserved it today,PS you can blame officials all day long but same for both sides we deserved nothing from the game today on to next week.

took the words out of my mouth andyd. want to win every game but at times you,ll get outplayed like yesterday and just got to take it and move on. for 90 odd mins. luton were the best div.2 side i,ve seen for years but we do not really help ourselves either. the main gripe i,ve got is the number of players they got in our box against the number we did. i know jackson was out but this billy up front on his own does not work without someone being near him all the time. we looked like the away side yesterday.

After watching a poor display in the first half at least you get to then queue 15 mins for beer in the rain for a beer, even though the queues are not actually that long.

The Luton crowds seem to get smaller each time, I can see the same happening if we play them next year.

Good to see turnstile staff showing discretion

Re: Hatter's Match Thread

To be honest I thought Coley got it pretty much spot on in his interview, Luton were quicker than us especially in the first half but were also much more physical than us - the ref never really had a grip on the game, couldn't clearly see the incident with Hughes in the first half but whatever happened he failed to deal with it properly & from that point handed Luton licence to do whatever they wanted & they took full advantage of that as most teams would.
The subs didn't really help matters, McCleod was lively & probably the best of the three but unless Sean & Jordan were injured I don't get why they were brought off tbh.
Hopefully yesterday was just a blip & we'll get it right & be back to winning ways next Saturday

If we play 1 upfront against Coventry,we got little chance of 3 pts, imho.

Have they found somewhere new to hide it on the Fishy site, or is there a reason why Professor Coleman's post-match comments don't appear as quickly as they used to?

Accymad - Hughes feigned a head butt, pure and simple. All hell then broke loose and to be quite honest I thought the ref dealt with it superbly. Took his time and let the players cool down, consulted all the other officials before delivering a compromise punishment that let the game continue with less recriminations.

Sadly, he didn't have eyes in the back of his head so was never going to be able to know the full detail of what had actually happened.

Just seen goal rush on channel 5 on catch up. Have to say two decisions I thought where iffy where correct decisions (Hughes incident and penalty). Shame we get 1600 home fans but can't help entice them back with a winning performance. Luton away support will continue to drop as there fans will have ticked of our ground as visited and some will think of the soaking they get and not be keen to come back.

Hi there, thought I would visit your forum, on the back of Saturdays game, yes I’m a Luton fan who was at the game ( and got wet!)... not here to cause trouble or even gloat , on what I regarded as a very good away win for us......but I have just listened to your managers view of the match.......is he for real?....I have no idea what he was going on about.... to quote “ I thought we were playing against 2 goalkeepers”.....and also “ my players don’t dive” .......pardon? What the hell was your player up to with that fall to the ground holding his head, which was a clear attempt to get our player sent off.........Is Coleman always like this?.......would expect it from someone like Evans or Ainsworth..... just felt it was worth popping on here for your views......anyway good day out, always like Accrington.....and good luck for the rest of the season ( sort of )....

Don't think it was quite the same for both sides take a look at page 22 telegraph, don't remember any of our players trying to knee one of theirs whilst holding them in a headlock.

That,s my point men against boys in football sometimes you have to bully your way to a win if you think we are going to win this league with pretty football think again not nice to watch but it,s a part of our game I don,t think we are very good at their 1st goal is an example of this Clarke was just pushed off the ball by their very slightly built left back and he had all the room in the world for the cross that resulted in the goal, I like the good football we play at times but we will need to adapt at times to the nasty stuff and if a referee let,s you get away with it you carry on.

don,t think luton were really that OTT with the physical stuff and there have been plenty worse sides that have come to the crown in the last few years. got to agree however that we need to match these sides in the nasty department which we seem reluctant to do. in the words of the ex derby and coventry manager harry storer,, no player likes being kicked but some dislike it more than others.
