It would seem that the ref had to be subbed after getting hit in the face with the ball and it took ages to change a liner to ref and 4th mon to liner.

Yeh, noticed it went to 90+11, no indication of any great hold-ups for injury, just sending off & pen surely can't account for so much Fergie time!!

Can we play with ten men every game, please Mr. Coleman ? ;)
Cracking game: five well-taken goals, a deserved penalty, a sending off, the ref getting poleaxed and subbed, the bar saving Stanley at the death, and a brilliant second-half performance from a 10-man Stanley.
Some really good performances today, especially Finlay and Clark, but the transformation in Stanley as a team after Conneely was harshly dismissed was just unbelievable.
First half they pummelled Stanley down their left wing and were generally bigger and stronger (am I repeating myself, I know) but, after conceding a soft opener, Clark and Finlay stunned them with two great individual efforts. A late equaliser for them just before half time was probably a fair result for the first 45 minutes.
But, down to 10 men and a couple of judicious subs, Stanley were transformed.
Opoku came on to make a solid back three, Sherif on in the midfield, and Stanley just hammered the Gas for 30 minutes.
Listened to Radio Bristol on the way home one gashead claimed Stanley were the best footballing side he’d seen this season. I won’t argue on that display.
But the BIG question is whether any lessons can be learned from the enforced changes.
I know there’ll be many of here who won’t agree, but, on the second half performance, neither our captain or vice-captain (nor even Billy Kee, dare I suggest) were missed at all today.
Coleman clearly has a squad full of talented, keen, young, and new players and, imho, he has to find a way of getting them onto the pitch. Not all of them all at the same time, but not to exploit their talents whilst we have them would be a shame.

Just watched the Dion Charles interview, he says that after he scored his penalty, in wht he describes as "banter" that the so called Bristol Rovers fans were throwing coins at him.

Absolutely disgraceful behaviour by "Bristol Rovers Scum".

No doubt the referee will have missed it....... very sad. Those "fans" should be ashamed of themselves.

Great result, would have taken a point before the game.
As for Seamus sending off. Soft yes, stupid absolutely. We’d have cried for a red if it was against us.
As for Charles and banter, anyone throwing a coin should be banned for life, but Charles could have made his point without full frontal “Saturday night closing time” gesturing literally a yard from the boards.
Turning to the game, we have problems in the middle and at left back that will continue to find us out week after week bar the odd result like today.

Opuka can play left back and we have Sherif who against Fleetwood was hard in the tackle maybe first game a bit to keen, we also have the new lad from Wolves, maybe me thinks time to take Conneely out for a while hard in the tackle he isn't.

Just seen the sending off on you tube-it was a pretty tame incident. If that deserves a booking, then after a couple of corners in every game of football, it should be down 1 v 1, not 11 v 11.

..and still I ask, whats with the keepers colour clash strip??

StanleyJosh 08-09-2019 06:28

Re: Bristol Rovers Match Thread (A)

for what it’s worth, I thought Seamus was lucky not to be sent off for his first yellow.
Studs were up and he was very late.
From the other angle where I was stood opposite the cameras, for his 2nd yellow there was a lot more shirt tugging than it looks on the highlights. Stopping a counter attack deliberately like that always warrants a yellow, just as their player received a short while after for stopping ours in a similar position.
Strange that the Bristol fans were taunting Evtimov, I thought their first 2 goals were both our left backs fault, which is frustrating as he’s been given the opportunity to replace Maguire, and although in my view slightly better, hasn’t really filled me with much confidence. The new lad who came on is a big tall lad who looks physical, just what we need so hopefully he will slot in.
Thought Clark was superb in spells, poor start but once he got his goal it filled him and the team with confidence. When he is at his best it’s so difficult to defend against him. He is a joy to watch with a ball at his feet. My only criticism (perhaps harsh, perhaps due to the expectation of him being one of our best players) is that when we concede a first goal, he never seems to want to have the ball much and influence the game. If the team is playing well, he will step it up but he’s not one to lift the whole team when down in my opinion.
Charles was a threat all game and closed down their defenders quickly, which resulted in Finley’s well taken second game. Finley had a solid came and won the ball with some outstanding tackling, few sloppy passes but that was, I’d imagine, a result of tiredness after virtually covering every blade of grass in the 90mins.
Their 3rd goal was a sensational overhead kick from one of the best strikers in the league. Probably shouldn’t have had the time to do it given how many players we had in the box defender the corner. But hey, the lads showed great character and urgency when we were 3-2 and a man down, ironically playing better football.
We are missing Billy Kee a tremendous amount. Especially with a strikers hold up play.
Pritchard has done enough to deserve his place whilst McConville has been suspended.
Play like that all season and we will be fine.
The exciting prospect is the huge amount of potential in this squad.
John and Jimmy have their work cut out in getting that potential out of the players.

Silly yes, however let’s look at the bigger picture.
Too many players were out of position, Bristol were counter attacking 4 vs 2.
You’d take a yellow card for that tactical foul all day long.
If their player had ran past him and Seamus hadn’t done something, I am 99% sure they would have scored.
And I know who the blame would be on if that happened.....

I would try one of the new loanees for starters. my reasoning is 90% of the time he passes sideways or backwards, also for a midfielder not very good in the tackle.

Spartacus2nd 08-09-2019 09:06

Re: Bristol Rovers Match Thread (A)

Conneelys job is to get on the loose balls and find the spare man, thats often behind him. Keep the ball moving to a red shirt and retain possession. Some players are more cautious, and some are more gung ho with it and will look for the defence splitter.

One of the most eye opening interviews i saw was with Xabi Alonso "i can go through an entire game without making a tackle. You dont need to make a tackle". He turned out pretty decent ...

Weve got inexperienced players all over the park and swapping Seamus out at this point would be suicide, weve got bigger problems at right back and massive problems at left back. I wouldnt be surprised to see us change things to 3 at the back, Johnson will replace Seamus for the ban with maybe The Sheriff coming in for Maguire

Keeper
Sykes, Hughes, Onopko
Johnson, Sherif
Clarke, Finley, McConville
Bishop, Charles

Selection is going to be very interesting in the next month or so.
I would imagine parent clubs for loaners will want to see them playing or no point in the loan.

You’ve taken glee in the scenario of the club having McConville and Conneely suspended.
Your words not mine.
Start watching away games for 90 minutes you might start to realise the points Stanley Josh is trying to make.

Which one and give your constructive reasoning for it.
Which one is going to be stronger in the tackle and always pass forward ?

one who always passes forward just demonstrates exactly what you are, no one expects that.but you try to twist things to suit your point.

Then you above many others should know how vital a defensive midfielder is to our set up.
Conneely does that. Scotty was good at it as well.
Who else is going to do it ?
Full of what ?
No good getting the face on because Josh and myself have asked you questions.
Diallo might be the answer.
As a kid he was outstanding at Rotherham but then again he was six inches taller than anyone else on the pitch.
Time will tell.

Obviously another club won't sell or loan their best, experienced players, unless they are trouble.
They loan potential with a view to the future.
