Re: Information about Clayton
If you get onto google street level and look up Whalley Road to Accy by Clayton Electrics (Now a Hairdressers) it shows the pyramid coping stone atop the building seen on the b&w photo.

Re: Information about Clayton
That's Whalley road with Canal Street in the back ground and Duke Street opposite on Whalley Road further back was Frank Scramblers grocers and then all the Coop shops following on almost till you get to Blackburn Road.

Re: Information about Clayton
One of my earliest memories growing up in Clayton was the mini-market where the Grand Mogul used to be.
Think it was the Em-Dee Superstores or summat.

Canal street was where me dad was born in 1924. He lived in My Great Grandads house. Was about half way down on the left hand side. Great grandads name David Lightbrown. I think he was a policeman for a few years. Grandads name Arthur Stevenson and my dads name David Anthony Stevenson.

Current Mrs P's mum and dad had papershop at the other end of the block, now another Indian takeaway.

Re: Information about Clayton
When I was young the corner shop was a pie shop, next a sweet shop, then an Ironmongers, following on a grocers, a narrow ginnel to get to the back of the shops, after the ginnel, Coop shoes then grocers, outfitters, butchers. Canal St was great to sledge down in Winter you could go right down to the bottom but had to be careful that you didn't finish up in the canal.
