Explanation for Advocacy anyone?
I have a course starting next week.... Foundation Course In Advocacy
Have googled it and found quite a complicated explanation from Wilkipedia
Wondered if any of you could explain it in simpler terms?
Thought it might be good to get a rough idea before I started
Thanks in advance

Re: Explanation for Advocacy anyone?
I don't wish to be cheeky but why are you starting a course if you don't know what it is?

I think Blazey would be the one to fill you in on that.
She is training to be one.

Re: Explanation for Advocacy anyone?
“Advocacy is taking action to help people say what they want, secure their rights, represent their interests and obtain the services they need. Advocates and advocacy schemes work in partnership with the people they support and take their side. Advocacy promotes social inclusion, equality and social justice.”
So basically you would be a voice of empowerment for whatever group of people you were involved with.

Re: Explanation for Advocacy anyone?
Advocacy is being able to speak up for people who may not be able to speak up for themselves.......it is influencing change.......deciciding where you are now, and where you would like to be...and what needs to be done to get there.
It is about empowering people too
It is a whole lot of other things as well....some of them complicated, but this would be my explanation of advocacy......if anyone has any better expalantions or wants to expand on my version, feel free.

Re: Explanation for Advocacy anyone?
So I would be learning how to stick up for someone... plead their case and help them explain what they need........?
Thanks Caz & Margaret

Re: Explanation for Advocacy anyone?
Yes sort of. Help putting things accross, for people who can't or think they can't get their voices heard. Presume the course is specific to whatever voluntary work you're doing?

I suppose it is in a way yes.... have just done a BME Mental Health Awareness course today and this one starts next week
The reason that I am attending these courses is because I mentor on a one to one basis with all kinds of people from all kinds of backgrounds
I have had a lot of training already, before I started, but could never let the opportunity go to do more training
