Total guess here, but...I think because it has it's own chimney, and therefore heating, it may have been used for light industrial purposes, something like a laundry? Lots of bigger houses around here were built with wash houses, and I'm just thinking this might have been run on communal lines, for the people who worked in the many mills in the vicinity. They do have similar things in Scotland.
Perhaps there may be some reference to it on the census?
