Anyone remember Jew Smiths?
Anyone recall the shop down Oswaltwistle that was half pawn shop/ half musical instrument shop where the guy nicknamed "Jew Smith" , due to the bad prices he paid, he was an elderly bloke who used to run it for a long time in 60's and 70's. Anyone got any more information?

I don't know how much it's changed up there but as far as I remember: when you get to the junction at Church, do a left up to Ozzie and not very long way up, near a bridge on the right hand side was a shop, it was split in two, when you went in the front door there was a area on the left seperated by a corridor, where he pawned jewelery etc and then on the right side it was all guitars and musical instruments. You couldn't miss it. My brother Phil bought some gear there around 72 and I went in there a few times over the years - does that jog any memories?

Could have been, but I don't know what was there before - any one who bought second hand music gear in the 70's will know of it as it was the only one of it's kind in Hynburn I think - selling 2nd hand music equipment.

There was a chippy on the block cashy, with a cafe out back, think its been mentioned on here before used to go in there when I worked for Pilkies in the late 60s, there was also a little grocers shop a few doors down who used to sell single ciggies and a match when I was at school

Re: Anyone remember Jew Smiths?
Ossy's like Roston Vasey.
A relative refers to a friend's first wife as 'the Jewess - a beautiful girl'.
Perhaps her old man flogged bongos?

Remember the chippy - went in there for supper with all the family the night before I left for the Far East - December 1963. My sister-in-law worked there.

Or maybe he played trumpet in a Jewish Jazz Band as apart from pawning jewelery he also sold brass: I mean trumpets and saxaphones etc.
