Re: German V1 flying bomb crash-oswaldtwistle 1944
How the hell did it reach Ossy its range was only 200 miles or so? Or was it one dropped over the North Sea from a bomber as it got to the coast.

Must have been an error of judgement, or some ones having you on, what would have survived a crash that would be readable, anyway Gobbiners can't read.

Re: German V1 flying bomb crash-oswaldtwistle 1944
My dad was an AFS auxilliary fireman in wartime.
I recall him talking of a bomb that set the moors ablaze, but the talk was that no housing in Ossy got hit.

Re: German V1 flying bomb crash-oswaldtwistle 1944
christmas eve 1944 heinkel squadron 1/kg53 launched 45 V1s from over the north sea against Manchester, many people were killed in the oldham and tottington area.several V1s carried no warhead only propaganda material in a hope it would survive a crash landing.I now understand the oswaldtwistle one possibly crashed near the old quarries off the grane road but not confirmed yet.One also crashed at gregson lane bamber bridge. I also believe the ossy site has been investigated by an ww2 aircraft research group.

Re: German V1 flying bomb crash-oswaldtwistle 1944
As part of the 2nd Group "Gruppe II" (LEGION CONDOR) from October 1944 they where reformed into a carrying "V-1 Träger" Unit, to enhance the weapons distance. As from November 1944 they flew missions against England As part of the 3rd Aviation Division

Re: German V1 flying bomb crash-oswaldtwistle 1944
The name "Legion Condor" was bestowed upon KG 53 on the 12th June 1939 in recognition of their exploits in Spain from October 1936, where German Military assets were deployed in support of General Franco during the Spanish Civil War.
service of the unit was roughly :-
1936-39 Spain
1939-40 Poland
1940-41 France & England
1941-44 Russia
1944-45 Germany & England
