When you think about the match fund, it is like getting £1 million for an investment of £100,000. Would you not try hard to find the £100,000 if you were the Council?

Re: Park lights ?
Ince when did HBC try hard at anything other than what they themselves benifit from. Unlees there is to be some huge amount of publicity then it could take a while.

Though technically they'll only get £900,000 for an investment of £100,000. I still think it's brilliant, don't get me wrong, and I DO want to see it happen. What I meant was that it was said in a very blase way 'we'll find it somehow', can you see the fuss when someone finds out that the budget has been slashed for something else to the tune of £100k.
As for finding alternative funding, it's unlikely that they'll be able to apply for other funding to match this as funders don't accept money from other funders as match very often. So either the Council will have to find the money or Friends of Rhyddings Park will have to fund raise.
In some respects I'd be quite happy to see Friends of Rhyddings Park doing some of the fund raising themselves - that way it gives more ownership to the people. If you've stumped up £20 say, to add to the pot you'd be more interested in how it was spent or less likely to give in to vandals, etc. Could help to encourage more community involvement.

Re: Park lights ?
Things that have been lost from the park in my living memory, [1965.]
-Tennis courts.
-Paddling pool.
-A park keeper.
-The bandstand.
-Pitch and put.
-Toilets.
-A cafe.
-Flower beds.
-A sand pit.
-Tarmaced paths.
I count myself lucky that I can't remember Rhyddings Hall, given to the people of Oswaldtwistle as a museum/art gallery, and sadly demolished by the council in it's wisdom. A neglected crown, sadly missing what could have been a sparkling jewel.

Re: Park lights ?
- Table tennis
- Place where you could hire bowls(balls?)/rackets/etc
- Ice cream shop
- Slides and roundabouts (I know they have them now but they're puny compared to what we used to have.
- Benches all around
- Peacocks

Re: Park lights ?
Benches, thats the main one I forgot!
The man who you hired the equipment from would also lend you a pencil for your score cards if you'd forgotton to bring one.

The best thing about the re-siting of the playground, as I'm sure you know, is the amount of children using the equipment since it was opened, even on wet days, proving that if the ammenities are there people will use them.

Re: Park lights ?
Couldn't agree more, Garinda. In hindsight the playground should have been bigger to cope with the amount of people who want to use it.
Does make you think how many people would start using pitch and putt etc if there was someone manning it all.

To think all the ammenites that have been removed its a digrace. Most municiple parks keep no animals at all we lost the animal corner in my local park 5 years ago and it is missed. The first time I was taken to Ryddings park as a kid I was fasinated by the peacocks and the beautiful fanning of its tail. Oh the happy memories dystroyed by a bunch of short sighted self interested so and so's. Where did the peacocks end up?

Re: Park lights ?
Peacocks? Don't know.
I'll ask the few manky rabbits and ducks that are left.

Re: Park lights ?
Shhh don't mention peacocks. They are noisy things and I am close to the park . I remember going to the park with my grandma, she used to live on Roberts Street, the peacocks were there then. There would be no reason why the play area could not be extended in the future.

Re: Park lights ?
Ok peacocks can make an awful racket, and I heard that they were removed because of complaints from residents on Edinburgh Drive.
They'll be complaining about the nasty leaves blowing into their gardens next.
It's like townies moving to the country, and complaining about being woken up early by the early cock crow.

Re: Park lights ?
It's angled towards Melrose Avenue/Hawthorn Avenue, so no complaints from Park Lane/Rhyddings Street please.
