This made me laugh, why do they need to do it at night?

Have you ever used thermal imaging? We use it to determine problems with our mechanical and electrical equipment and we don't turn the lights off

i would guess more likely, cos at night these places are more likely to be unattended, identify were they are n then watch during the day.

Perhaps they were searching for any signs of intelligent life form...they can't find any during daylights hours!
