Nicholas Freeston

[Lost in Cornwall]

Having moved house and tidying stuff up I came across a book I hadn't seen for some time, Poems by Nicholas Freeston which he wrote an inscription in for me in 1966. I remember him living across the street from us when I was little and people talking about him as a poet but I hadn't realised until now that he appeared on radio and tv to read his poetry and that he was a member of Poets Laureate International. He apparently received the certificate admitting him to that organisation from the Poet Laureate of the Phillipines.

The newspapers called him 'The Wordsworth of the Weaving Shed". He lived on Barnes Street in Clayton-le-Moors and worked as a weaver in local cotton mills. He became famous for his poetry in the 1950s and 60s winning many awards and appearing on radio and television.
