Farmville etc - how does it all work
An interesting webinar on how companies such as Zynga are able to deal with the explosion of popularity in running such as Farmville. Sorry its short notice but I opnly received teh newsletter myself late last night.
Its a very tech heavy thing but if you have an interest ( SAMF, I'm looking at you! ) then its worth the time it will cost you.
There are also some other past webinars that people may find interested if you want to understand how companies are looking at using the Internet and Cloud Computing in general.

Enjoy!

Re: Farmville etc - how does it all work
Farmville is a game played on social networking sites such as Facebook. You start with a small plot of land and you slowly expand. You plant crops and harvest them then you sell them you can also buy animals such as cows which produce milk and you collect when it's ready With trees you can grow say oranges and then harvest them. You also get neighbours by sending requests to your friends on Facebook and other social networking sites.
You can buy Facebook credits and farmville credits either online or shops like game and Gamestation sell them, you use credits to buy Farmville cash which is actually virtual money but can be used to buy items for the Farm.
When you get neighbours you can visit their farm and earn XP points by helping out with various tasks.

I kid you not, they do. Some kid hammered his dad's credit card to the tune of about £25k just to make his farm look the best.
To be fair I don't go in for that sort of thing.
It probably would the same for games such as 2nd Life aswell.

You've mentioned 2nd life, well that's what the kid would have been on if he'd have used my credit card

Yep , thats why Zynga the producers of Farmville and other online games are reckoned to be worth between $5 and $10 Billion , supposed to go public with an IPO early next year .
My own thoughts , once/if the economy picks up and the un and under employed get back into full time work the use and value of 'pastimes/timefillers' like these will drop like the proverbial brick

Re: Farmville etc - how does it all work
someting intersting in the local 'rag' today , seems one of the 'investors" in Farmville/Zynga game websites is a Russian "oligarch" who was able to spend ... $$$s on a local home ...
Yuri Milner buys $100 million Los Altos Hills home
my question is .... just how the 'heck' were these people allowed to accumalate so much money/wealth in such a short space of time, I think I understand capitalism , but the stuff we read about these Russian wizz kids is beyond comprehension
