Try this, I've been using the free version since my other AV ran out, it updates itself regularly for the 1st 30 days, then reminds you to update, if you still stay with the free version. www.malwarebytes.org

i no longer use the free/ please buy the unlimited antivirus such as avg, avira etc
microsoft provide a free antivirus called microsoft security essentials which is made my microsoft for microsoft products and is more than enough and dosnt eat up as much resources as others again because it is mad eby the people who also made your operating system.
If anyone suggests norton and is within reach save arguing and just kick them in the nuts as it will protect yor computer as effectiveliy as a chocolate fireguard would protect young children from the fire

I had the paid version of norton up until now not had any problem with it
I second that John....it runs in the background all the time, updates itself without anyhelp from me and has a 24/7 live helpdesk.
You can try it FREE for 60 days BullGuard Internet Security

accyman, you obviously know your computers so it gives me kittens when you say that!
I've been using Norton for over a year now and as far as I know have had no problems although I don't find it user friendly, I just didn't fancy the hassle of changeing it when it was due for renewal. It gets good reviews so why are you so unhappy with it?
I didn't rate Norton either....it was supposed to be protecting my system but it let viruses and trojans through....and yes, I did the updates regularly.....and No I didn't visit 'shonky' sites.
It also slowed my system down......it was a right royal pain
