My java isn't working, therefore I cant get into accyweb chatroom. I've reinstalled it and its still not working, I just get an error. Any suggestions as to what the problem can be?

Re: Java
Two Q's here.
Where did you get java from? (Should be java.sun.com)
What version is currently installed? (open a MS DOS Command prompt , type 'java -version' without the quotes obviously and let me know what it says.Just the top line something like "java version 1.5.0_05")
Its either
The plugin for your browser hasn't realised that its been updated and is still pointing to an old version that has now been removed Or...
It could just be that the chatroom software was written to run on an old version of Java, by installing a new version it stops working as it depends on what we call class files that are no longer part of the java language. (Java is a living language and constantly improves, the standard says that classes can be marked as deprecated which means they will be removed in the next version.

Its the newest version, its off the java website. I was really disappointed last night as there where loads of people in the chatroom and I couldnt get in could you just tell me which version YOU have thats allowing you to get in, and I'll just downgrade
I think my laptop is just being a pain because my cd drive is no longer reading discs, my mouse gave up on me, and i think i may even have some mmory failure and its a year old bloody laptop made by a leading motherboard manufacturer, I didnt quite expect it to be so damn annoying and unreliable

XP has command prompt too
its 1.6.0_03 - the newest version that you download very easily off the java website. I have suspicions that its not just a problem with accyweb solely though, as I seemed to get error messages off the java website too

Isn't it basically the exact same thing? I though ms dos has the same commands as command prompt and its used in exactly the same way?

Re: Java
See here
Microsoft Corporation
Pedant says Neil is technically correct, talk to any techie and he will still call it a dos command prompt. It even pumps out Microsoft DOS as its 'version'. Seeing as the original MS stood for Microsoft its a tenuous argument either way.
Its a command interpreter that will interpret MSDOS as well as extended command set. so as teh command line java command is 32 bit its technically not MS DOS per say rather Microsoft DOS if you get my meaning.
anyway, 1.6 has made quite a number of changes and anyting marked as deprecated in 1.5 would be removed in 1.6. As teh chatroom software was almost certainly written for 1.4.2 this is why it is likely to be failing.
Roll back to 1.4.2 or 1.5 and it should be OK.

Why not? The updates to Java aren't like Windows updates, there is no security aspect to them. The language is constantly evolving and thats why it gets updated. Its perfectly safe to roll back. You can even have multiple versions installed( I have to have 1.3, 1.4, 1.5 1nd 1.6 installed at work in order to do my job. As long as you tell your browser which to use you can make it use an older version. If your using firefox, type "about :config" in teh address bar and it spews its config out. Search for java and look for where it specifies teh path. Its probably set to default $PATH or something like that. Change it to where you have installed the old version e.g. c:\Program Files\Java 1.4.2_015\bin ( the \bin is important) and it should work fine.
Re Neil, In my XP it dumped out
Microsoft(R) Windows DOS
(C)Copyright Microsoft Corp 1990-2001.
Same at Work.
Inspires you with confidence doesn't it that the same OS is showing different versions of a core component.
