Even more important: A false sense of security is worse than a lack of security. And unsubstantiated claims of superiority don't help in a reasonable discussion either. ---------oh dear have just copied this from Lesses link.

Too busy in another thread telling a newbie about his superior & unique job.

(Couldn't just have said, You're right job centres haven't got any decent jobs in).

I never claimed my job to be superior or unique Less, perhaps you are getting desperate in your attempts to have a go at me.

Re "Virus", its not, its a trojan in the same manner that me telling people to right click their C drive and select "Format". the fleshy thing behind the keyboard should be the weak point in any system, Windows with its autorun/preview execution etc puts that weakness firmly in the OS space.

You seem to forget that even this 'expolit' requires downloads to be executed to 'prime/break/give over' the system. They NEED the fleshy thing to do it. Should we have desktop launchers, no I don't believe we should or certainly not in the manner they are currently. are they that bad, to some degree yes, they can lead to some action however as also mentioned in that article without Root privilage escalation the damage that can be caused is limited to the users data alone, not even other users data is accessible. The OS itself is protected unlike in Windows where by default the users run as Administrators. will you end up with an unbootable system? no, will you be able to set privilages for stuff that could affect other users of that system? no

Will Linux ever be susceptible to a hit like the "I LOVE YOU" virus? NO not ever.

do we need to educate users - Yes, stupidity is one thing, lack of education another.

The point is and the OP is looking for AV because they need/want to delegate the responsibility of securing an insecure system to something. Out the box Linux does not require anything except a modicum of education and common sense.

I'm not desperate to have a go at you, You started 'having a go', yesterday, why? because you are a fat headed idiot with only one line of thought. Entwisi is the best, has the best and will never hesitate about bragging about his latest new toy, be it his 'phone, job, car, etc, etc.

Did you come onto the thread to advise steel Jack and help him with his Windows problem? No, as usual rather than help, you mentioned your choice of O.S. & then you dragged myself into the same post. Hardly a sign that I was desperate to have a go at you is it?

As usual it was promoting your O.S. of choice in a way that denigrates a different O.S. without the necessity to do so.

I've asked you before to inform folk about your choice by starting a thread about Linux but, no as usual the only way you seem able to promote it is by knocking the system most people use out of convenience and therefore knocking those people as well.

Use Linux if you wish, I won't be knocking it. Only the person with his head so far up his own exhaust as to not allow others their freedom of choice without his blinkered prejudices that always put Windows down, he I will call, don't know if you or anyone else has noticed the same guy seems rather prejudiced against anything Mac as well. Me? I often use all three O.S.'s each has it's idiosyncrasies and each has it's own advantages therefore I am happy to use what is there before me.

Until you mentioned me I'd read but stayed out of the thread because SteelJack had been given genuine, accurate and sincere advice from other Windows users, they didn't want to add to his problems and unlike you none of them were showing off about their 'superior' system or knowledge.

I hope you will now allow the thread to go back to being helpful and in future not blame me for anything YOU drag me into. You pompous Ass.

Neil, before you censor this post, I am not being grumpy, but although I laugh at entwisi's attempts at superiority, I genuinely feel sorry for the guy, he must be so insecure, always trying to have the best, even his mediocre is a better mediocre than anyone else's!

Why do you say that? The overwhelming majority of Linux users are "technically competent" - they have to be. The virus you quoted relied heavily on the user being a bit of a numpty - running an unverified mail attachment.

If Linux ever became mainstream, more numptys would be using it, so it would become "profitable" for virus writers to turn their attention to Linux.

The same could be said of Windows. I run two windows machines with an internet connection but no antivirus, but I'm "technically competent" enough to know how to steer clear of viruses, keep the PCs up-to-date and the NAT router stops any inbound attacks.

Cashy's comment about a false sense of security being worse than no protection at all is spot-on, and it applies here too. If all virus writers did so because they hate Microsoft, or because Microsoft was easiest to hack; then a user would be right to feel comfort in their choice of Linux or OSX (or whatever). But they don't - they hack Microsoft because it has the biggest installed user base - making a hack more likely to be propagated.
