8 Barnes ST Accrington

I lived at the above address for about 15 years, mainly in the 50s. Next door to a chipshop, diagonlly opposite The Cricketers Arms and almost opposite The Queens.

A bit higher up the street was Bensons garage and a chapel.

Perhaps Bob or someone can tell me when my old house was demolished and will there be any pictures in any archives anywhere.

Re: 8 Barnes ST Accrington

I lived at 8 Barnes St Church until 2002. I once had a parcel wrongly delivered which should have gone to 8 Barnes St Accy. It was collected and redelivered. I think it was some computer equipment for some small business or other.
I cannot recall precicely what year that happened but it must have been after 1996, so the building was in use then

When they knock every thing down in Pit St, retarmaced the road, installed 4 sets of unsyncronised traffic lights, & called it East Gate, made right cock up of the traffic flow.

The chippy on the corner was run by Robertshaw's for a while, the Chapel further up became a car repairers, I seem to remember a tyre merchant operating in that street as well, had to attend a fire there.

Wasn't Robertshaw's shop on the opposite side of Barnes Street to the chippy? The Chapel became Benson's coach garage and now is John Hill's car repairers.

Don't know exactly when it closed, but I am sure it was used as a workshop/storeroom by Relay Vision in mid to late 60's

The Chippy which Robertshaws had was on the right as you walked up Barnes St from Abbey St. The Robertshaws lived in Hargreaves St, at Nu 21, for over 20 years.
The Cricketers Arms was at 4 Pit St.
