Accrington & district in 1838

I quote from an 1838 book which describes hundreds of towns and villages:-

ACCRINGTON ;a considerable vilage of 6283 population (1923 in Old Accrington,4960 in New Accrington....a factory for weaving and printing calico cloth is powered by a steam engine of 26horse power.

CHURCH-TOWN; has 979 inhabitants (I have not seen Church named in this fashion before)

RISHTON : has 919 inhabitants

HUNCOAT has 502 inhabitants

I shall have a look for Clayton soon.

I think that books a bit off, by 1828 Broad Oak had 4 steam engines, there were also 2 in Baxenden, and one at Sykes Mill, & the other at Marquis Mill.

The book isn't saying that they've only got one,or that there is only one, it is commenting on the size of one of them.

Not a right good book for information then is it, if it only mentions a 26 HP steam engine, that one was one of the 4 at Broad Oak, & makes no reference to the others. Plus is says spinning and weaving. Broad Oak were Dyers, Finishers & Printers.
Another thing where did they get the population count from, the first real census and population count was in 1841.

Censuses were taken from 1801 but the first "modern" one was in 1841

I know that and it took several years before every one used it, thats where some budding genealogists run aground trying to trace their ancestors. But Dobbo's on about the populaton in 1828, if a 1821 count is being used then it was 7 years out of date. I can give you more accurate figures for Old & New Accrington for 1666, but it does not list those below the age of 14.
Another thing which grounds many genealogists,was the change over of the gregorian & julian calenders, the change to new year being Jan 1st instead of Easter,if not converted correctly it can make children appar to have died before they were born

Sorry it is 1828.

My database for 1841 contains 8718 names. The 1851 contains 10,344 names. I also have a list of names and address for New Accrington in 1790 & 1828.
