The picture was taken during the period when they were clearing the sites for the creation of the new shops in Union St and the Arndale Center, as you can see alot of the houses in Crawshaw St & Union St have gone.

it is Ellisons Tenement, sometimes I used to walk across it on my way to school (Hyndburn Park 1950's)..cut through a small passage and then The Hippodrome would be there.. That is Hitchen's on Hyndburn Road in the background..close to it there was a graveyard where the sheep went before going into the slaughter house..It was great when Ellisons Tenement was a Fairground....with the black pea stall ..[/quote]
That grave yard was the old Macpelah, they originally came from Clayton, back in the 1700's, it was some times referred to as Gods Little Acre, in what was then Allom Lane (Hyndburn Rd), the congregation built a new church on the west side of the viaduct in Blackburn Rd, they later moved to a new church in Cannon St, that has now closed and the congregation moved to Christ Church, which is now referred to as Trinity.

Re: Accy Old Photo's - John Kelly's Album
Time for a few more, this set are to do with CROWDS
Firstly, the dignitaries opening Broadway. The ceremony was held on the corner of Cobden St. which no longer exists. Does anyone know the date?
The next photo is of Coronation day 22/6/1911 in Abbey St. (George V)
No idea when or why on this one, but have you ever seen Accrington so packed?
A carnival passing through Queens Rd in 1920......
July 1959 A pot fair on Broadway
Who remembers the sunken gardens in 1958?
A military funeral in 1915........
Finally (for now), anyone have any ideas about this photo??

Re: Accy Old Photo's - John Kelly's Album
Enjoyable thread , looking forward to more . Just on a 'cultural' note looking at the 1912 military funeral I'm surprised how many of the chaps watching the cortage pass still have their caps on , thought it was tradition/habit in those days to doff your hat when a coffin passed by .

Re: Accy Old Photo's - John Kelly's Album
Might take a lot of page space up but as far as server space goes, the image is only stored once on the server

Looking at the photo of he Pot Fair, there are a number of faces that are ringing bells with me, but I can't put names to them

That picture of the crowd in front of the Market Hll was taken August 1st 1915, when the Accrington Pals marched into Accrington on a recruiting drive, if you look closely you will see A & B coys across the end af little Blackburn Rd and into Peel St.
Note they are wearing khaki uniform and carrying rifles.
Some sh*t head has put a the same picture on the display in the Market hall but labeled it February 23rd 1915 when the Pals left for Caernarvon.
When the Pals left Accrington in February they wore blue melton uniforms and only had a few old Long Lee Enfield Rifles.

Before you know it they'll be using theatrical blood to make their injuries look realistic.

I love that photograph.
Everyone looks so well dressed.
No such thing as trackies and trainers then.
Light coloured caps, cotton dresses and net underskirts, little cardies and pearls.
Grace Kelly would have blended right in, in the Accrington of 1959.
