and yes, Katex is correct, the stand was erected in Peel Street for the 1913 visit of King George and Queen Mary.

Look at the photo again and tell me where there could be corner like that in Plantation St. Plantation St is level, the street on the corner of the building in the picture is going down hill.
Trouble with some of you, you take for granted the buildings have always looked like they do today.

Re: Accy Old Photo's - John Kelly's Album
thats what i thought, streets goin down off Plantation E.G. Lee St etc have only a slight slope, the streets goin up off it E.G. Elephant St Etc had a bit steeper rise.

Cheeky beggar, your not far off, look at the picture again, look at the angles of the building, and the slope of the street.
Then go down on Bank St, and look for a corner like that, but remember the altered frontage.

Re: Accy Old Photo's - John Kelly's Album
Checking my records, it shows there was a Slaters Inn on Plantation St, but that was back in 1869, the owner was refuse a licence renewal, well known poacher and gambler. So that rules out Plantation St as the location for the pub in the Picture.

I have .. been busy checking modern photos with this and older photos and still think is that corner. Is it not then? The traffic signals are interesting.

Re: Accy Old Photo's - John Kelly's Album
I am puting my money on Whalley Rd at junction of Broadway. I think it was knocked down to accomodate Broadway, probably in 1936/7 when this was opned as a new road. For many years the land there was left as a garden. The Hope & Anchor pub was just a few doors away, and the Broadway Hotel, formerly Peel Arms was across the road. I suspect that the traffic lights were put in just before the pub was knocked down.Broadway was previously called Marquis St after a local businessman/landowner
I think Atarah is right - the pub comes into the story of 'Bronco Bill' (Bill Hodson)who fought behind it with Joe Hurley, knocking him to the ground and getting charged with murder. Bill had suspected Joe of knocking his wife off. He got sent down for life but was released on licence after saving the life of a prison warder. Manslaughter yes, murder probably not in my view.

Re: Accy Old Photo's - John Kelly's Album
Agree not Bank Street now .. yes, did have doubts about Porters ... Retlaw has added a comment to the 'photo about chimney pots. Had already noticed this from old pictures of Bank Street. This section of Bank Street had 3 chimney pots not 2 ... you started the confusion Retlaw, ya' monkey..
Looks like what Bob and Atarah said then.
Shame, can't just read those street signs. Enjoyed the debate though.
