St Catherines House Magazine Accrington – A Mill Town in East Lancashire

I've just come across this artcle online.
Contains an interesting theory of how the town came to be called Accrington.

There have been other threads relating to how Aker inga tun got its name.
The Rev Burgess did a lot of research into Accringtons history, there is also a lot of info on Accrington & District in the Coucher book of Kirkstall, its mostly written in what was known as dog Latin, with some parts in church Latin. Quite a lot of the place names mentioned are still in use today.
There is also a lot of history & peoples names in the Halmote Court Rolls, when the de Lacy family ran Accrington.

Re: Akeringa

A present day Norwegian pop star is actually called Ake Ring. Ake Ring's town sounds more likely than Oak Ring Town There is also a place in Norway called Aker near Oslo. Perhaps the origin is Viking as opposed to Anglo Saxon.

Re: Akeringa

Quite possible, Balbus. The Vikings in the northwest came over from Ireland and were originally from Norway rather than Denmark as were the Vikings in York and eastern England.

The Cuerdale hoard discovered near Preston in the nineteenth century is Viking treasure and others have been found in Furness and Silverdale in 2011.
