Ancient Wall ?

The location of this one will amaze you, it amazed me. Where is this ancient looking wall?

I'll give you a clue to start you off, it isn't in the Ribble Valley

Re: Ancient Wall ?

What if I said that it has sacerdotal connections?

Re: Ancient Wall ?

Would that be to an Abbey or more recent sacerdotal history? I'm thinking on the outskirts of a larger establishment perhaps?

Re: Ancient Wall ?

Technically speaking, and if I wanted to be really pedantic, I would have to say NO.

But since you are so close it makes very little difference I will award Willow the coconut. Though I suspect that Doug may have been getting close. It is actually at the bottom of Black Abbey Street. And separates the street from the river as it goes under the culvert. It faces the site of Abbey Grange which was founded in the 13th Century and so it qualifies as one of the oldest parts of Accrington. The thing that astonished me is how rural it looks, it could almost be anywhere in the Ribble Valley and yet it is slap-bang in the middle of town. Such a pity that all this area seems to be used for now is for parking cars.

Incidentally, in a plan for the redevelopment of Accrington, produced after the Second World War, this area was supposed to have been the Artistic and Educational hub of the Town, with a new Museum Art Gallery and Technical College. Considering that the town is now supposed to be dedicated to promoting tourism, I find it strange that there is nothing in the vicinity which gives visitors any idea of the area's historical associations.

Re: Ancient Wall ?

I can't believe I didn't recognise this earlier!!! Why? Well, I took a photograph down there earlier this year to post on the board because I think it's such a sadly wasted area of town which could with a little imagination be made into something quite attractive, a little oasis of calm and beauty - but what have we got instead? A car park! Not even a particularly convenient area for a car park and hardly necessary when we have a multi storey one at the Arndale centre.

I wonder if I can find my earlier photo?

Re: Ancient Wall ?

I thought that piece of land had been earmarked for a new health centre, I'm sure I've read it somewhere, possibly Councillor Jones in the Peel newsletter.

Re: Ancient Wall ?

If that is true we are going to be falling over health centres before very much longer. Are we such a sickly bunch?
