another local history puzzle
This will make you think.
any suggestions as to the use?
Take a look when next in town - stand in front of the Market Hall, almost facing Church Street. Look across towards what was once known as Bridges Corner - there is now a shop selling drawers etc. on the corner (has the name Stylistics over the door) Cast your eyes upwards - look along the stonework to the right and you will see about 3 of these ........

Suspect Atara may know already TD .. just teasing our brain.
They are quite decorative, so possibly not for any 'day to day' stuff. Seems to be some sort of blackened stones above, which could suggest heat source.
No idea actually ... LOL.

was my first thought phil, then discounted it assuming there would be more further down towards the railway pub, cos buildings are the same.

Re: another local history puzzle
Either a vent for primitive central heating or a highly decorative overspill water spout.

Re: another local history puzzle
KATEX!!! Well done! Such good guesses off everyone. When first pointed out to me, I had thought something to do with cables for trams, but .... Katex is 100% correct! For flag poles! Well done!
