Beech Bank Wilpshire

Okay I know it's over on the dark side and not in Accrington but I was wondering if anybody can confirm it was a maternity home and if it now exists in another format or has been demolished.

Also while I'm on the dark side, how can I find out the history of 63 Higher Eanam, it's currently a tile shop but were these shops actually cottages before ?

can't remember cottages dave, but just past the tile shop across on same side was a police station as i recall, mate was killed on that bend coming home from work on his motorbike.

This is the area in 1911 which looks like it was a retail business then.
At No 63 were John William Holt an Insurance agent and his wife Elizabeth who was a draper working from home

I know my mother's women's group used to go on trips to "The mother and baby home" at Wilpshire. I don't know exactly where it was though. I believe it was a home for young women who had children "out of wedlock" and I presume most of the children were then adopted. I would think it ceased to exist years ago.

I think that the mother & baby home, was near the corner of Whalley New rd & Hollowhead lane. I do not know if it was called Beech Bank though.

There was a Mother and Baby unit located at "The Grange" in Wilpshire.
The Minute books are kept at Lancashire Records Office.

I can confirm that the Grange was situated on the Corner of Whalley New Road and Hollowhead Lane at Wilpshire, there are now houses built on it.
It was originally a home for unmarried girls who went there to have their babies who wwere adopted, it later changed to a unit for 'out of control' teenage girls - only closed relatively recently, I can remember working in Wilpshire in the early eighties and it was still there - best end to it to be closed down and bulldozed, it must have caused an awful lot of misery in its time.
