Book Recommendations Please

As I don't live in Accrington, or even Lancashire, I am rather handicapped in finding good books about the history of Accrington, especially social history (yes, I know, the answer would be to take a trip over there - all in good time!)

What I would very much appreciate is recommendations of books about the history and social history of Accrington, which I am sure I will then be able to purchase from one of those internet site places which no doubt had better remain nameless.

I am currently particularly interested in the period from 1870 to 1910, although 1850 to 1920 would work too.

Subjects I would like to learn more about include:

Employment - cotton mills, cotton printers, iron works, Entwisle and Kenyon (Ewbanks)
Education - Church Schools, Board Schools and Night Schools
Housing
Local newspapers
Transport
Anything else you think I should know about

I want to educate and myself and learn more about the lives of my family in Accrington. Alternatively I could just bombard you with endless questions (although I am sure that will come in due course anyway!)

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks very much for that list - and probably for preventing the creation of a dingle!

I need to check out my County library site for some of the books - although I fear that they may not have the enthusiasm I do for Accrington's history!

However I see that some are still in print, and I see that your books retail for the complete price range from under a tenner to £95.21!

I may need to be selective in my purchasing!

Thas missed one Dobo.
History of Accrington & District by the Rev W.A. Burgess. He was going to have it published, but he left the district, and it was never completed.

I would'nt put much faith in anything writen by Ainsworth, no one has been able to verify his sources.
He did work for Accy Observer, so a good story sells.

Currently looking at Swann, all of whom I am quite sure have long gone. But some parts of the discovering process are quite fascinating.
