Re: Clayton history In 50s & 60s

I remember Hackings F & C, also Pillings. I think they had 2 boys Alan who would be about 62 now and a younger one.

Tony Walkden did he not marry a girl named Kathleen? I can't recall the milk man, but we used to get our milk from the co-op.

Re: Clayton history In 50s & 60s

Hi Alan, I lived in Clayton until 1962 when I got married. I didn't move far away. I now live in Ossy and have lived there for longer than I did in Clayton. By eck you have certainly brought back some fond memories for me. People and places. Tony Walkden was my best pal.. It should have been Kathleen but I was a tomboy. I am still in touch with Tony and he lives not far from me. He married a girl called Kathleen, that's why people get mixed up with her and Tony's sister. You don't know how I can get a picture of the old St Marys Church at Altham, do you. Anyway best of luck and keep those memories going. Bye. an old Claytonian

Remember both cinemas ... wasn't the Empress called the "laugh and scratch"? And the swing brig ... and the Village Blacksmith, a Dutton's house. Basil Brierly, the last rag and bone man, used to call in there for a pint.

I remember the Sat'day pictures at the Star ... thrip'nce ... you got a cartoon, a movie ... usually an oater ... and the good old cliff hanger. I watched "Rock Around the Clock" there, and "Love Me Tender". You could nip out of the show; grab some fish and chips, and head back to the movie. Great times.

Yes Jim, My hubby remembers him, he was also a member of Clayton council. Another well known man in Clayton around that time who was on the council, was J.W(Jack) Talbot. He had a builders business on Atlas St. He built and lived in one of the bungalows on Talbot Ave. which was named after him. He also owned and managed the Vic ballroom. Jim Birchill was the band leader at that time.

My aunty Mary Talbot, ( my grandmas sister ) married Jack Talbot, He had been married before, He had a son & a daughter, Edward & Hilda from his first marriage, Hilda's daughter lives in Clitheroe. I used to go to the Vic with aunty Mary, when she went to clean in the mornings, It was later sold to Fred Skinner, My aunty rose past away in the 1970s, she worked with my mum at the Carborundum, I'm still in contact with her daughters Margaret & Sheila, Also there are photos of old St Mary's church if you google it. My dad is still a although in his 90s he's as sharp as a tack. I was over in April and he filled me in in all things regarding Clayton. Bye the way its Tony & Kathleen Walkdens golden wedding this Saturday at St Mary's club in Ossy ,

Hi Alan.
What is Hilda's daughter's name, my husband cannot remember. Edward's wife's name he thinks, was Olive, and daughters name Marian.
My hubby did the first year of his apprenticeship for Jack Talbot. Both Edward and Hilda's husband Bob(Catlow) worked for Jack. He also remembers Mary, Jack's wife.

Is Hilda's daughter's name Marilyn?. It was Easter 1948, after leaving Junior Technical School, that he started work for J.W. Talbot & Son. Although he is in his eighties, his memory is not as good as your Fathers

Yes Irene It is Marian , Our house in Blackburn Rd, backed on to Talbots yard, in Atlas St.Bob Catlow was a very quiet man, I called her aunty Hilda although she wasn't really my aunt, and aunt Mary was my great aunt, she had a child out of wedlock called Jimmy, Jack Talbot was a lot older than her. Alan, was old Beswick the chemist there when you lived in Blackburn Rd?. He was always coming into the workshop for a natter and a brew. Did you know the late Volny Crosston?. He worked for Jack when my hubby was there, and later, after he was married, started his own firm, Crosston School of Motoring up Ossy. In fact he taught my hubby to drive.
