East Lancashire Regiment WWII
I'm doing some family research and have discovered that my grandmother had a bigamous marriage to a soldier serving in the East Lancashire Regiment in 1942. Unfortunately I've been unable to find any records of this 'man' having served in this regiment.
His name was Hugh Sinclair and he was born and lived in Scotland so I'm a little puzzled why a Scotsman would be serving in an English regiment. His rank on their marriage certificate reads 'Corporal'
I have my suspicions that he wasn't in the East Lancashire Regiment at all and used this as an excuse to explain his absence but I would like to confirm my suspicions once and for all.
I do know that he was arrested and the case went to the sheriff's court in Scotland. Someone told me that the army would also have 'dealt with' Mr Sinclair.
If someone could point me in the right direction to confirm if Mr Sinclair was indeed a Corporal in the East Lancashirre Regiment, I would be very grateful.
