This might be anold chestnut but why was Elephant Street so named along with the associated Elephant Pub and when was it demolished.? Also, what connections are there between elephants and The Swan Hotel on Abbey Street Accrington?
t is likely that Elephant St was named after an elephant which was walking up Manchester Rd towards Haslingden with the rest of the circus when it dropped dead. Legend has it that it was buried in what became Elephant St. The Swan pub is nearby
I know of no connection between the Swan and Elephant St, though it was one of the first pubs in the town to have a telephone from which trunk calls could be made.
