Lower Antley St is parallel to Blackburn Rd. I haven't been on there recently but there used to be an isolated little row of three or four terraced houses at the Church end and a sort of factory ruin opposite to them. That's the thing I thought it was. Maybe I'll have a look tomorrow if I remember.

It does look like Newark St/Savoy St area, my grandad used to have a garage up there,

Hardly the gates of paradise

Yep, Lettie is in the right area, its Savoy Street - two photos here

First one taken Feb 03 - Hyde Bros. (paperbag manufacturers) used to be in the building next to the gate. Dont know what the premises were used for though.

Re: Hardly the gates of paradise

OK. The building was formerly the stables of Anderton's Antley Boiler Works, Adjacent to it was the premises of Hyde Brothers, Paper Merchants.

Willow, Lettie and Atarah get the coconuts. Mez gets a coconut to help with the mental block.

What none of you grasped is that the buildings occupy part of the site of the former Lower Antley Hall. From which Lower Antley Street takes it's name and which dated back to the medieval period. There is also a Vicinial Roman Road in the area, about four feet below the present ground level.

Re: Hardly the gates of paradise

Wow A-b do you think we can persuade the council to dig down to the Roman Road - get Time Team in! We can have a real tourist attraction there, very historical.

It has always amused me that Higher Antley Street and Lower Antley Street are so far away from each other but it makes sense when you think that both are named after halls and originally there was probably very little in between.

I love these history lessons.

(Lower) Antley Hall was owned at one time by the Rishton Family. I am currently researching this name as it is my family name!!

Re: Hardly the gates of paradise

Another little but of interest - those two houses directly behind the yellow car in your first photograph there A-b are known as Lodge View. Can't see a lodge and there certainly isn't much of a view these days but have you any idea why they would be named that and where the lodge is/was that presumably it refers to?
