Hippings Vale CofE School Air Raid Shelters

I've just found a cutting from the Observer. It is an advert asking for tenders to demolish two air raid shelters at the school . Tenders had to be in by 23rd February 1959. Some on here may remember those shelters. I vaguely remember the ones outside St Andrew's School in Russia St. They had wooden benches to sit on.

I still remember the old air raid shelters opposite the school.

After they were demolished it made more room for the travelling fair and gypsies to move on to the spare ground.

We had a gypsy boy come in to our class and pretended he was deaf, until the teacher dropped a half crown coin on the floor. You have never seen a kid move as quick to pick it up in your life.
