Milnshaw Park And Hagg Reservoir Area Of Town

Milnshaw Park - this was Accrington's first public park and recreation ground. It was opened in 1880 and was first known as Victoria Gardens. It used to have a bowling green, croquet lawn, open air bathing pool and separate playgrounds for boys and girls.

Hagg Reservoir - when you've been shopping at ASDA and spotted ducks on the lodge, ever thought any more about why its there? This was the reservoir that supplied water to Frederick Gatty's (Gatty Park!!) Bleach Works. Gatty came over here from France and is the man responsible for inventing the KHAKI dye for military uniforms.

A very pertinent post. Has anyone been into either Gatty Park or Milnshaw park lately? I remember both parks from my childhood, when they were parks and were well stocked with flowers and play equipment and were well looked after. Gatty Park is a shadow of its former self and Milnshaw is an eysore!

What are HBC playing at? At every damned opportunity they prattle on and on at depressing length about how concerned they are to improve ameneties and yet they allow this shameful and wanton neglect to continue.

If there is anyone from HBC reading this post.... I WANT AN ANSWER!!

It's seems to be that most parks in accy have gone down hill. I took my son to the park on Thornyholme rd and that was a mess so I dared try the small Huncoat park which was worse - there was broken glass everywhere, the gate was padlocked so you had to access it from round the back (a narrow pathway full of glass where you really wouldn't feel safe), the slide was full of grafitti and some of the bouncy things didn't work. There was no-one else playing on it so that says it all. I like to know what HBC are spending all our council tax on.

Are the little pond's still there on the hill above Hagg's lodge?
There's another pond I remember too (Rogans pond?) it used to be full of disused vehicles and such.

This was situated on the hill immediately behind the "clock garage" on Hyndburn rd.

the two small ponds have been filled in as they where condemned as being unsafe,kids used to go newting in them from all the schools around.Rogans pond isnt there now filled in,used to fish on there for perch sat on the tyre of the upturned car that was in the water, spent many a day messing in and around black and whites.

I remember playing around those pond's when I was at school as well. We got our critters from there to stock the pond that we built in one of the Quadrangle's at the Cromwell building at Moorhead, I should imagine that's been filled in too.

I remember that upturned vehicle in Rogans pond so well, maybe somebody somewhere has some pictures of that area. I can't believe we even went swimming in that pond. Unreal!!

Well maybe just maybe because those pond's have been filled in that now the kids have no where to play so they resort to vandalism. What else is there to do?
It seems like every tiny bit of land where we used to play as a kid's is turned into a housing development.

Yes I know there has to be progress and modernisation but with the current state of Milnshaw park and surrounding areas I can't honestly call that progress.
So really where can the kid's play these day's.

know what you mean about swimming in them mudpits, but to me sharnhall was the cleanest of the lot of them.But they said there where big pike in there and you had to swim like **** to get across..........lol. used to throw javelin for hyndburn schoolies, practised down at sharnhall ,could get a stone straight across without hitting the water?

Your going to have to jog my ancient memory here, wasn't Sharnall the res opposite Gatty park?

I suppose youv'e been swimming at the Bull Head bridge too eh?
Another spot was just to the east of the Swing Bridge (Nr Joseph Arnolds)..
I didn't like the leeches there though!!

If my wife could see where I'd been putting my body when I was young she'd divorce me for sure.

True the state of the parks are not what they used to be, but what can you expect from a council that slashes grounds staff, i happen to know the park keeper at gatty & milnshaw and there is just him for both parks. and when he has to contend with threats of violence from groups of youths on their way to and from school, its a sad state of affairs

i think we as individuals should do more to care for the place we live, i for one have made a start, i have taken some of the kids that "messed about" on the bowling green and turned them into a football team see www.churchfootballclub.co.uk , in doing this i hope to have started educating them towards making this a better place to live for us all.

its all well and good just blaming the council but i feel we all need to be responsible for our own sake, and its to easy to just push the blame at others feet,
we need to educate for the future rather than just patch up the present

Thanks for the well wishers, if any of you fancy getting cold and wet on a saturday morning, check out our fixtures section and come and watch one of our games, we play our home games at Foxhill, Ossy ( there is nowhere in Church to play..........BOO HBC) the boys could always do with your support, you might be surprised how enjoyable it really is.
