Re: Old aerial view of Accrington centre
Great photo - i got my bearings from the market hall, i love the roof on the outdoor market. Can clearly see the Broadway Pub, Town Hall, Shifters and the Karrimor building.
I'm going to guess it was late 70s, early 80s when the pic was taken.

Re: Old aerial view of Accrington centre
Old view? It's far too modern for me but I did recognise the town hall and the Odeon.

That mill were Walmsleys Leather Works at one time. It was also useed as a Cotton Mill, my Aunt worked there many many years ago. It looks like it as taken not long after East Gate was opened, and before they destroyed Broadway and the Market.

Re: Old aerial view of Accrington centre
I think I'll review my first post - I think mid to late 70s. A bit earlier than I originally said.

Re: Old aerial view of Accrington centre
Defo a mid 80's shot, as you can see the Arndale Centre on the left and that opened in 1987. However, I go back to when the car park at the back of Woolies and M&S was a sunken park where I sent many hours of fun. I also remember when you could drive the length of Broadway. Also recognise the Melbourne Street area where you could catch a bus to Burnley, Manchester as well as the Rossendale Valley.

Re: Old aerial view of Accrington centre
The back part of the 'L' was the Ministry of Pensions and Insurance. I remember it well as I worked there after leaving school. It used to sicken me having to stand in front of it every Saturday night to wait for the Burnley bus. No-one should have to look at work whilst going to the Mecca!
