Old Fire Station

Can anyone tell me has the old fire station always been on Manchester Road and was it this building that housed the air raid sirens during the wars?

Re: Old Fire Station

Nobody have any information? I have found out it was built in 1932 does anybody know were it was situated before this. I'm sure at school i was told it was part of the market hall and that there was a bell housing above the back entrance of the market hall that was something to do with it being a fire station.

Can nobody shed any light?

Re: Old Fire Station

Dunno wez i was told at school that the bell was for fire brigade and they used it as air raid siren during war trying to find out if it's true! It was your post about the air raid shelters that got me thinking about it all so i can thank you for the torment lol!

Re: Old Fire Station

oh right, didn't know that. I knew there's a tower behind the fire station in their yard that they use for training exercises.

Re: Old Fire Station

What we need to find is someone who was around during the war and ideally before 1932, trouble is that as time passes there are fewer and fewer of them about.

Re: Old Fire Station

I can vaguely remember hearing the siren being sounded from the fire station in Manchester Road, that would be some time in the early to mid 60's. I am not sure when the practise was abandoned. Wasn't the siren located on top of the drying tower?

If you go to Amsterdam, on the first Monday of the month, at 12 noon, all of the city's Air raid sirens are tested. Very spooky sound!

Old Fire Station up for auction.

Maybe that link is not too clear. If you click on the 23rd Feb auction a database page appears. The top one is the "former fire station". Double click on the 001 and all will be revealed.
