Should've been snapped up by a taxi firm - easy for drunks to remember on a Friday at last orders.

Tel me about it Steve, by parents phone number was 383727 which was very close to Mac's Cabs number, the telephone was always going of at 1 and 2 o'clock in a morning with people misdialing for a cab

Talking telephones, have a look at this; you need to read the fifth paragraph from the end:

HISTORY OF AUTOMATIC TELEPHONY

I'd heard a few years ago about Accy having one of the first automated exchanges but for some reason I thought it was in the 1920's, not earlier. I wonder what exact circumstances led Accy to be one of the first in line and especially with the very first automatic interconnection (with Blackburn)?
