I lived on Crown Street from 1954 till 1966 and I was at St Peters from 54 to 58.

No the school was where the undertakers is. The school st the bottom of Crown street was St Oswalds. What was your grans name. I dont know what Hindle and pad was/is. I lived from willows lane walking up Crown street (the houses only started on the left hand side ) half way up.
The fourth house up on the left. Almost opposite Peter street.

Re: old st peters school crown street

St Peter's school was on the land which is now Wolstenholme's funeral directors .

St Oswald's school was next door going down Willows Lane between Brown St and Crown St . The land is now used mainly by M and M Coaches .

St Oswald's had to be closed in the mid 1960s because the building was unsafe .

The two schools are now back as neighbours at the top of Fern Gore .

I think that St Peter's Institute was a building mainly fronting Richmond Street, but also at the corner of Higher Antley Street. It was on the left hand side facing up Richmond Street.

I never heard of Hindle and Paddbury on Crown Street. The only yard down Crown street was Jim Bullcocks scrap yard with the entrance at the bottom of Crown Street near Willows lane. Jim's house was on Paxton st ( I think). The only Taylor round that area was my best mate Malcolm Taylor and he lived just round the corner in Ranger Street opposite Michael Ellwood. Mikes dad was a piano tuner. There was a chip shop by Crown Street and Ranger Street in the late 50s and there was little Jacks grocer shop on the corner of Crown Street and i think it was Maden Street. ( I think Paul Cavanagh lived up there). I think Cashy knew some of the young gals around my area as well.

And Len never went beyond fish , chips , peas and steak puddings .

Like you say , the best for miles .

In the 1970s , when his wife had died I used to see him in the Stop and Rest . He used to bring a few fish wrapped up for some of his fans .

When my dad used to work at Bulloughs , he often took sandwiches made from a fish from the chippy for his bait . A delicacy I have inherited from him .
