In other words ... Junction 7 is the Dunkenhalgh area .. so the Load of Mischief will have been demolished early 80's ... your memory of it not being there is intact then ...

One of the reasons I remember it well, is because when we kids use to go to Rishton a lot.Quite a few of my of my family lived there. Always got of the bus at the Load of Mischief, and walked to Rishton.

For years I never knew what lay beyond the lights at Clayton,we never ventured that far.

Any idea where the name Load of Mischief comes from?

Seems was called the Land of Mischief originally and evolved into this .. where the first name came from ... just seen it somewhere whilst googling .. LOL .. will have to search again. !

I used to go and watch all the Scary Movies at the Palladium, remember when I was under age to go see the A rated movies. Used to slap the make on real thick.
I don't remember the Palace? I only knew it as the Shopfitters because half of all the students at Rhyddings ended up there, (except me) Where was the Empire?

would assume up the ginnel just lower than the palladium on other side just below the tech joaner, don't remember it as the flicks, but thats were the Empire dance was, am sure some "Gobbin" will correct me if thats wrong.

That,s where it was cash and what a great place to go in the 60s, every Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday. I think it was the Stag pub at the corner and a bank on the other corner.

The Stags down Church and is still there, the pub on the corner was the Royal, Twas my granddads local in the 50s

If you look at this photo "Full Size" you can see that where the wood is breaking away on the corner the original "Palladium" sign

twas the royal a good thwaites house, became my local when i worked at enfield mill, Joe was landlord at the time, had some great friday nights in yon late 60s n have some funny tales to tell at some point.

The Accrington Corporation Steam Tramways Company was a joint venture between the Corporation and a private concern, under the Accrington Corporation Tramways Act of 1882.

Construction began in 1884 with three routes radiating from the Market Place. The first ran to the Commercial Hotel in Church, via Blackburn Road, travelling past the Town Hall and the tram depot in Ellison Street. The second route terminated at the 'Load of Mischief' in Clayton-le-Moors and ran via Whalley Road. The third route ran to Baxenden Station on the boundary with Haslingden, along Abbey Street and Manchester Road. The infrastructure and depot were owned by the Corporation and leased to the company for a period of 21 years

Sad to see the Palladium looking derelict. As an exile of 47 years my image of Oswaldtwistle/Accrington is in a time-warp and I see the Palladium, in my mind's eye, as a cinema that's beginning to lose out to television but still attracts an audience and still looks quite smart.

I saw "Rock Around the Clock" there (nobody ripped up any seats) and wept my way through "Carousel" (oh....when Gordon McRae died and they sang "You'll Never Walk Alone" to his widow. Eat your heart out Gerry Marsden). I watched Errol Flynn fight the Sheriff of Nottingham and rode the range with Roy Rodgers. I also got off the 267 Ribble bus there from 1948 to 1959, going to St Mary's and then Paddock House.

I see Union Rd as full of thriving shops, Church train station looking just as it had when my mother lived there, the Urban District Council offices at Church Commercial, all soot-blackened and busy, with that fascinating curved wall.

I sometimes went to the Palace where the manager used to creep around the auditorium looking for courting couples "up to no good". If he found one doing something he disapproved of (God alone knows what) he would grab the male by the collar and forcibly eject him on to the pavement outside; such a guardian of public morality.
