Palladium Bus stop to change its name

Think I have recently read that the bus stop on Union Road, known as "The Palladium" is to have its name change to "Ossy Mills" as this is a popular venue these days. The Palladium of course no longer exists, but .. when it did, what an brilliant place it must have been.

The "cinema hall" was erected around 1920, built on the site of some old delapidated cottages on Union Road, facing the Technical School. Built to accommodate 275 folk in the balcony and seating for 1000 in the main body, just think of the stories connected with this hall.

Sketch of the cinema which appeared in the local papers in 1920.

Re: Palladium Bus stop to change its name

I remember it as the poshest of the 3 cinemas in Ossy.
I recall many visits with my mum to see Fred Astaire musicals, and in teen years to see Rock Around the Clock, and the Elvis movies

It doesn't seem all that long ago that I played bingo there a couple of times.

Palladium, Empire and the Palace on Rhyddings Street, three cinemas in such small town, when I was little the films used to change 3 times a week at all three, Monday and Tuesday, then change Wednesday and Thursday, then Friday Saturday Sunday, whats more it was only about 5d (old pence) in the cheap seats. Bag of sweets from Makinsons on the way there, then a bag of chips at the chippy on the way home

My recollection matches that but for one exception.
There was only ONE cinema in Hyndburn which operated on Sundays.
That was the Odeon - and only one evening 'house' starting at 8pm

This pigeon loft is an eyesore even for Ossy. It has no architectural or historic merit and the sooner it's pulled down, the better.

That was a place I never visited.
No cinema in Ossy opened sundays, is what I should have said.
Ossy was more 'religous' - I recall getting disapproving looks for wearing slacks on a sunday.

I once got some nasty flea bites from the Palace in Ossy. That would have been about '54.

Your right Margaret, when I think about it cinemas didn't open in Ossy, because if they had I'd have been there

Mr Saporiti owned the Palace - he lived in a semi in that small area of (then new) houses bounded on 3 sides by Fielding Lane, Park Lane, and Hornby St
His lad Eric was about my age and used to play out with the Hornby St lot
