Question Pendle Witches and Halloween!

Some years ago Countryfile did a Halloween Special and a lot of it was round Pendle Hill. John Craven mentioned a pub that was legendery where people used to congregate which had a cable system over it which was used to slide down and they used to run a witch down it on a broomstick! Anyone know more about this pub? Did anyone use the cable system? Any info welcomed

Re: Pendle Witches and Halloween!

I can remember back in the mid 60s loads of young folk would make the trek up to Pendle hill , from both the Clitheroe and Sabden sides at Halloween, especially if it fell on a weekend night , could get a bit 'rowdy' but never any trouble , most folks were too knackered after the hike and usually soaked in the rain (not many had cars or transport in those days) these were the days before the ski-slope being built next to the Wellsprings pub.

The pub up pendle was the Wellsprings, can't remember that much about it, was ejected after about 15 mins. but many used to congregate in it that night.

In the 70's also I went up there once I think. But you could could see all the lights going up Pendle from the coppice on a clear night! Don't they walk up there any more?

Halloween always reminds me of the Mother-in-Law, I can picture her now sat next to the fire shinning her broom ready for the annual tip over the rooftops, God bless her little cotton socks
