Please help!
Hello guys, I was wondering if anyone here could help me on my local history project? I am researching three of the main benefactors of the Haworth art gallery. They are William and Anne Haworth, George Nuttall and Alfred Hitchen. I'm at a bit of a brick wall atm and wondered if any of you accringtonites could help me out?
William Haworth worked for/ owned Messrs Thomas Haworth and Son, a spinning works, did a lot of philanthropy work for the town and built Hollins Hill in 1909, his sister Anne gave it to the town to turn into a museum.
George Nuttall was managing director of F.Steiner and Co from 1897 and manager of the great Turkey Red works.
Alfred Hitchen (the one I'm finding most interesting) worked for Howard and Bullough, he apparently set up Globe cars in Charter street and invented the "non-fouling change speed gear". He also bought a hyrdo at Sawley (which I have found no record of at all) and farm land in Grindleton.
If anyone has anything they could tell me about these people or the companies they worked for I would be eternally grateful!
