Potted meat

Blast from 1930's or 40's - has anyone heard of Mrs ____ (?) who used to have a shop somewhere around St James' St/Paradise St area selling potted meat, amongst other things, with the slogan 'it's soft but it's damn good'?

Re: Potted meat

In 1951 there were no shops in Paradise St, but some opposite the baths next to The Junction pub. Mrs Wixted kept one. She had a daughter, Jean, now will be 70yrs. The potted meat would most likely be Marriott's from their workshop in Oswald St.

The name Wixted rings a bell, three brothers named Wixted, served in the Accrington Pals, one of them, James, was the first of the Pals to die after leaving England, for Egwypt.

They tasted really good after swallowing a gob full of fluoride in the baths

Re: Potted meat

Thanks for the replies, Wixted may ring a distant bell, sadly my dad died a few months ago so can't ask him ... apparently the lady selling the potted meat had been to America and was always talking about it and considered something of a show-off. My dad lived on St James St, probably from 1930s to 1947 when he got married, he lived with his auntie and uncle who were tailors.
