Schools History Essay Competition

On Wed. 12th October, the Accrington Grammar School Old Boys Association committee are meeting members of staff from schools in the area to discuss the implementation of an essay compeition amongst the 11plus pupils. AGSOBs are giving a prize of a lap-top computer to the winner's school, and a £50 prize to the winner him/herself. The essays will be on any topic involved with local or family history. Committee members from the Local History Society, the Family History Society & the Civic Society have been invited. The result will be declared at a meeting at Accrington Academy in the Spring of 2012.

That meeting took place and a liasion has been established with schools. Staff and interested pupils will be attending Acrington Library on Wednesday 18th January 1.30 -2.30pm, when the library is closed to the poubolic but is being opened for this meeting by the library, who want to be part of this effort to interest youngsters in local and family history,. Next Wedenesday 18th Jan 1.15pm-2.30pm in Accrington Library there will be some pupils from local schools (80?) gathered to hear about this competition. I am hoping that there will be some adulkts from the Local History & the famioly History Societies there, with the library staff, to give them some guidance in what they might be writing about.
