St james church - accrington

Shock! Horror! Hope what I have heard in town today is absolutely NOT true, but .. picking up vibes there are plans afoot to "get rid" of this church. Please no! Dont let this be true.

Anyone else heard any rumours??????

What on earth is happening to our town. Who are these "faceless" people making all the decisions about demolishing our buildings.

I really can't see this happening, is the building not listed? I mean it was reported in the paper last week that the council have been in contact with the people who own the con club and Cannon Street Baptist Church to do the repairs on them. Surely they are not going to destroy that lovely church!!!!!

Maybe the ones who own it - church of england - are pruning their property portfolio.
The sacred heart church went kaput unexpectedly.

They will not be able to do any thing other than close it.
There has been a church on that site since 1544, the present one was rebuilt in the mis 1800's.

If they are going to close it, then the pals colours need removing and putting some where safe, they have deteriorate enough by being in there, it smells of mould and damp when you enter the church.

Re: St james church - accrington

Hi yep, maybe, if anything happens to St James, it may mean "another use for the church", rather than anything drastic! I think, like many churches these days, it has a dwindling congregation. Good point though Retlaw re mould and damp. The Pals colours maybe should be moved. (see, you talk sense sometimes!!) And good point Bernadette about it being listed, I think that is correct, so as you say, they can't really do anything drastic like knocking down etc. Maybe the word we are looking for is "closure".

I don't know if this rumour is true or not. What I do know is that there are more people who attend their mosque on Friday in Hyndburn as there are who now attend a Christian church service on a Sunday. The lesson of the story is quite simple: if you want to save your Church or Chapel, then turn up there on the Lord's Day and then put your dosh on to the plate.

I use to sing in the choir at St James when I was a young girl.
