St James Church - blocked up windows

Someone once told me that something terrible had happened at St James Church in Accrington and because of this they blocked up windows with stone at one end of the church. Apparently the evidence of this can still be seen. I think from memory it is the end nearest the Accrington Pals memorial. Does anyone know about this or is it just one of those stories?

Re: St James Church - blocked up windows

There was an article in the Accy Obs donkeys years ago about that wall and the supposed opening, it was behind what was called the Bay Horse buildings, part of which collapsed one wednesday afternoon not long after closing for the day.
The article mentioned that workmen had uncovered this entrance, which was below the level of the church and they went in for about seven feet,

But it was so eerie that they wouldn't go any further, and the door way was sealed up.
