The correct site of the Old Toll Bar - Grange Lane/Manc. Rd area of town

I took this photograph today as I was having a wander around town.

Now here is a classic - incorrect information put up on a building (maybe in all innocence, but somebody didn't do their homework correctly) which gives people false details.

The modern plaque on this rounded building says it is the old Toll Bar BUT IT IS NOT, the old Toll Bar was on the site on the opposite corner of the road! If you look at the houses which are at the top of Grange Lane and Manchester Road, you will notice there is a definite semi-circular shape to the road. This was the actual site of the old Toll Bar and dont let anyone tell you any different! The rounded house you see here was once a well known grocers shop - Bews, then Rileys, then it became an old people home, then North Lancs Training took it over.

Do you mean the toll bar was where the police houses were/are?

Hi, yep, the toll bar used to be on the site where the FIREMAN's houses are, facing up Manchester Road
