The land behind Hippings Vale Community Centre

Does anyone have any photos or information about the land behind Hippings. I was told recently that there used to be a mill there but it was either burned down or knocked down, possibly 40 or 50 years ago.

Would be interesting to have any info about it.

Re: The land behind Hippings Vale Community Centre

I attended the original Hippings methodist primary school 1945-1953(which was demolished). It was commonly known as Mount Pleasant (no idea why)
I was married at Hippings methodist chapel next to that school.

I lived in the vicinity for the first 18 years of my life -
and I have no recollection of a mill close by the school and chapel, other than the one with the deteriorating chimney on Rhyddings st which has been discussed recently

I think Gayle means the community centre on Harvey Street.

It was Hippings Mill, which might have been a paper mill, rather than textiles, according to my mum's distant memories.

I remember the gate posts, some of the walls, and floors, still being there in the late sixties. The gypsies moved on, and used the hard standing for their caravans in the early seventies.

I don't know when it was demolished, but in the fifties there was also the remains of a demolished mill chimney.

Re: The land behind Hippings Vale Community Centre

Also within the Straits was Hippings Vale Mill. It was formed in 1861
by twelve local tradesmen, with the ambition of running a cooperative
mill. The building was completed in 1865 and, as the
business progressed, extensions were made in the following years.
By the 1880’s there was a three storey mule spinning factory and a
weaving shed. The company had 230 employees by this time. The
company’s mounting losses lead to liquidation in 1932. The buildings
were demolished over the following years – the only remains are the
gate piers that have been built into a garage and the outer walls of a
cotton store on Mill Hill.

Does my cousin Michael qualify to be included in your thread of local 'notable' persons?

Re: The land behind Hippings Vale Community Centre

I don't think I can directly link the map, but if you put Oswaldtwistle in the search facility on this site, and select the 1912 map, you can see where the old Hippings Vale Mill was. There is a paper mill marked at White Ash, but that is further to the west, near to where the Swanee was.

The old stone engine beds, and the chimney base were great places to play when we were kids.

The travelling fair and the gypsies stayed on the spare ground between Holly street and Kay street opposite the school.

Yes, it's on the otherside of Harvey Street, from Ash St.
