Walter, can you shed any light on this? My friend's Great Grandad, Lawrence Nuttall, has 2 regt no's 28679 (East Lancs regt) and 28869 (Royal L.R.). Does this mean he was transfered out of the PALS? If so, is there any way to find out when?

Hi Steve.
First off Lawrence was never a Pal.
His first posting was as Pte. 28679. 2nd East Lancs
Wounded in the hand in March 1917. On recovery he was
transferred to the Kings Own Royal Lancs as Pte. 28869.
D.O.Wnds 1-Oct-1918, buried in Greviller Cemetery.
S.D.G.War records him as Pte. 28859. K.O.R.L.
Only his service records would give dates of transfer and they don't exist.
He is on Accrington War Memorial and Cambridge St Wesleyans War Memorial.

Retlaw, I wonder if you can sort something out for me. It’s regarding Samuel Mallalieu, service number 58047. Samuel was in the 55th Battalion Machine Gun Corps (Inf) formerly 1898 N. Lancs. Regiment. He was the son of Alfred and Ann Mallalieu and lived at 38 St. James Street, Accrington. He was killed in action 9th April 1918.

The above information I got from the Accrington Roll of Honour 1914 – 1919, via the Internet, and if I am on the right person Samuel was my husband’s great-uncle.

However, according to information supplied by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission on their site this Samuel WAS the son of an Alfred and Ann Mallalieu but of 6, Melrose Avenue, Layton, Blackpool.

Both the above sites have him as being remembered with honour at Loos Memorial.
I also have him as being born in 1892 – christened 1893, but both the ARH and the CWG have him as being 24 when he died in 1918. No mention of a wife only his parents, so not sure of his marital status.

Couple of queries, one being was Sam No. 58047 from Accrington or from Blackpool? If the latter then he might be a different man altogether, and also a query re the discrepancy with his age.

Thanking you in advance for any help re this, though not sure if he was a Pal or not - I just want to make sure my records are correct.

No Sam wasn't a Pal.
But I think the attached will answer your question. PLease don't send the info to that site you were looking at, its got mere errors than a sieve has holes.

Retlaw you are a gem! Many thanks for this information. I will keep a copy of the newspaper clipping in my file, much appreciated. Pretty sure now that this is the one and the same Samuel who was my husband's great-uncle as the Alfred who is my husband's ancestor passed away in 1900 which fits in with the report of Sam being the son of the late Mr. A. Mallalieu.

Not sure why Samuel had been living in Blackpool - but that's something else for me to try to find out.

Off to show him indoors the clipping now. Once again, many thanks.
