Yates ancestry?

Hi, I wonder if anyone can help with this? Been trying to trace my family tree but getting a bit stuck in Accrington! My grandfather was Edward Yates, he changed his name to Gough-Yates before he married in the 1930s. He was b. 1909 in Accrington, and d. 1950 in London - we think he had one brother. Edward's parents were James Yates and Catherine Gough, both from Accrington. James was a coal miner. We think that the Gough side may have come from Ireland. But know no more? In the 1901 census I can't find James and Catherine at all (although I've found a James Yates and Kate Gough which may be them, but I'm not sure). I am pretty sure they were married in 1896. Are there any Yates descendents still in Accrington who might be able to fill me in?

Thanks in advance for any assistance!

Re: Yates ancestry?

Have you looked at this site

http://www.lancashirebmd.org.uk

As you say, they have a James Yates marrying Catherine Gough in 1896 at Hyndburn Registry office. (Marriage certificate Ref RM/90/193 at Preston).

This is a good free site too

Re: Yates ancestry?

There is a branch of the Yates family alive and well living in Baxenden, a village a couple of miles from Accrington. I know that they have been very active in the local church for many years. Here is the site address of St. John's, perhaps they will pass a message on to the Yates family for you.

Re: Yates ancestry?

Unfortunately, quite a common name .. many in the local telephone directory .. and unless you just hit on someone who has also done research into their family history .. could be difficult.

My very best friend married a local lad called Yates and will certainly ask when I go and next visit.

Best of luck on your search anyway .. x
