ACT Now!

Accrington and district Civic Trust (ACT) held another meeting this evening at The New Jerusalem Church just behind the Swan Pub on Manchester road. It was brilliant to welcome two new people to the group and we are hoping that with time more people will come along and share their views, likes and dislikes of Accrington and its surrounding area's. We are looking for people from Church, Great Harwood, Baxenden, Oswaldtwistle, Rishton, Altham West or anyone with an interest in Hyndburn to come along and swell the ranks.
The next meeting will be at The New Jerusalem Hall at 7:30pm on Wednesday 18th May 2011.
This evening we discussed the ongoing projects at Arden Hall and Owl Hall. We talked about Haworth Art Gallery, what is happening with the old fire station on Manchetser road, the sale of some of the lodges up on the coppice, planning applications and also shared ideas on looking into a museum for Accrington.
As a new member myself I was keen to know how ACT get involved with making changes and preserving the history of Accrington and the surrounding towns. Many people will have noticed the memorial between Yorkshire Bank and Bright House in Accrington. This large stone was saved by ACT from the old gas board building that once stood where the Job Centre is now. ACT also had a huge part in saving Haworth Art Gallery and the house that stands in the grounds of Oak Hill Park.
ACT is primarily concerned with the preservation and promotion of Accrington's history for current residents and future generations. We want people to visit Accrington and enjoy it's architecture, its history and we also want local residents to be proud of their town. We are keen to preserve our historic buildings and help people be interested in keeping our towns culture and history alive.
Some of our members have good links with the council and they can and do make changes to our towns.
Please come and join us at our next meeting and help us understand what is important to you about your community, what you would like to see done, what you would like to see changed or saved and together we can raise the issues with the necessary groups, boards and people.
We will be thrilled to meet you - 18th May 2011, 7:30pm New Jerusalem Church, just off Manchester Road, Accrington.

Like you, Bekibird, with the History Society thread ... can't believe missed this meeting. A certain person was supposed to be letting me know when the next one was. He must have forgotten .. will make a note of the May one.
