Adrian Shurmer (Shurmer's Guide)
Adrian, compiler and publisher of a guide book that should be in every home in Accrington, died this morning. The Big 'C'' He was a much-loved, jovial bloke and family man.Since retiring from the police he has been self-employed as a driving instructor specialising in HGVs.

re: Adrian Shurmer (Shurmer's Guide)
Sad to hear that, Adrian was a larger than life character, believed fervently about save driving, and his Guide was probably the best street guide in the country, I have one on my desk even today and use it quite regularly

I knew Adrian very well from his time in the police.
Another good bloke gone before his time.

He certainly was Frank, and the kind of a bloke you didn't argue with a big lad, but safe driving was his passion

re: Adrian Shurmer (Shurmer's Guide)
I met up with him once with a good mate of mine who was a traffic cop with Adrian.
He was telling us about an idea he had to cut a lot of traffic out from the Clayton lights.
He said a road from Gt Harwood road end, behind Clayton le Moors and out near the Dunk and then to the M65 or Hyndburn road would make life easier for the locals.
I don't think anybody ever took it up though I may be wrong. Maybe now he is no longer with us some Councillor may put it forwards as his own idea.

This article mentions the scheme, Gremlin
Bus station plan to make roads safer | Accrington Observer - menmedia.co.uk
It also talks about his ideas for a new Accy bus station, which were obviously rejected in favour of a scheme which according to the article should have been started six years ago!

It was looked at few years ago when Adrian put it forward, but finding the money was the problem. It would have made a big difference to the traffic flow in Clayton. But building new roads is an expensive business.

Neither do I, and it is eight years old. I just happened to find it on the net.
