Boxing Sadly Missed

What has happened to this one time noble sport?Does anyone long for the 70's/80's,Sportsnight on BBC1 when you could watch some right old set to's.Gardner vs Christie,Benn vs Ewbank,Sugar Ray vs Hearns/Duran.Even Bugner & Bruno.Dave 'boy' Green vs John H Stacey. The list is endless.Nowadays we have Amir Khan, but a lightwieght fighting over 5 or 6 rounds(if it lasts that long) just does'nt have the same appeal.Heavyweights are just lumbering giants hoping to land that knockout punch.Definatley a sport that needs a good kick up the arse, and Murdoch has'nt helped its cause.

Re: Boxing Sadly Missed

I love watching the boxing, and I'm always disappointed with Amir Khans fights though I know he has to work his way up, I was also a bit disappointed with the Joe Calzache(sp?) fight though it wasn't his fault the opponent was all mouth. One good thing is that itv now show it and not sky, though it does seem to be once in a blue moon.

Re: Boxing Sadly Missed

The thing about Calzaghe is that he should have taken his chacne in America long ago. Sure, he would have lost a few times and not have had this 20+ title defence run, but he would have been a better fighter for it, made more money, and he could have shown his talents to a global audience. It's a bit sad, but the fact is Britain aside, JC will never be recognized as a true great like he deserves to be, because he sparsley ever fought anyone decent.

As for Khan, we'll see how good he is when he fights a real pro, as opposed to the teachers, plumbers etc he's been up against. I dont yet think he's ready fror a title shot, as I think Jon Thaxton would destroy him, and I dont know how he would take that at his age.

Well done Mickey Jennings as well
