Grand National

Come on let's have it ... which neddy have you put your dosh on for the race? How do you pick your horse, do you know and study it's form? Is it close your eyes and see which horse you land on or do you pick a name that is significant to you?

I've got 2 e.w. on Ebony Light (it's my nieces name) can't remember what the odds are .

Good luck with your bets !!

Re: Grand National

Yes, I've decided to have a go - it's the only race of the year that I do but it's kind of a tradition. My Grandad used to let me choose a horse from a very early age and then if it won he'd give me the money. I was never very rich but there used to be a horse called Golden Gayle that got placed in the top four a couple of times so I had good pocket money then.

It's not something that I'm encouraging my kids to do though and I haven't let them choose a horse this year.

Re: Grand National

My Bro rang up at dinner said he was in betting shop & do i want a bet on.... err yeh but couldnt remember the horses or odds so told him to pick one from top ten horses so he picked me then 3rd fav at the time for a £1 win.

Which ended up joint fav 5-1 Glan Royal which came in 3rd at end of race mmm wish i had put a bit more on each way now lmao. My bro spent £15 on donkeys hehehehehe & yet he picked mine...so got the satisfaction of smugness not chosen a decent horse in years lmao

Smile Re: Grand National

I love horse racing, but the Grand National is the only race in the calendar on which I actually place a bet (am not really a betting man).

I study the form, but more often than not, let my heart rule my head.

This year, the unlucky horses which attracted my money were :

Hedgehunter 2nd
Clan Royal 3rd
Le Duc unseated rider at Canal Turn (10th fence I think)

There will be some kind of return but maybe only as much as I staked. Backed the first two horses for my wife too - and maybe it will be 4th time lucky next year for Clan Royal !

Actual form over the course itself is usually reliable, though of course the race is a lottery and anything can happen (as was so well illustrated last year when Clan Royal was carried out when in a clear lead at Bechers second time around), but today, the best horse on the day won and full marks to Niall Madden for giving Numbersixvalverde a great ride !

Re: Grand National

Put £10 worth of bets on and won £3.56 because Clan Royal came in third. Not a very good return on my investment so don't think it's a hobby I'll be taking up long term.

Re: Grand National

To be perfectly honest I wouldnt even know how to put a bet on .. I am guessing it involves a small bit of yellow paper and a real little pencil.. like the pens you get in argos... thats as much as i know about horse racing and betting

Re: Grand National

I put a fiver on Innox at 14/1...It fell at the first fence! I bet on unusual names and thought Innox was pretty ramdom..

Re: Grand National

Put my winning £3.56 on Arsenal to win and lost that as well - so basically betting is bad news.
